Trauma/PTSD Treatment
Trauma is an incident that causes physical, emotional, spiritual, or psychological harm to someone. For some, trauma is very obvious and they understand how and when their trauma occurred. They may be reliving those moments of trauma often without trying, memories feel “stuck” or intrusive.
Emotional and psychological symptoms of trauma include:
- Shock, denial, or disbelief
- Confusion, difficulty concentrating
- Anger, irritability, mood swings
- Anxiety and fear
- Guilt, shame, self-blame
- Withdrawing from others
- Feeling sad or hopeless
- Feeling disconnected or numb
There are three main types of trauma: acute, chronic, or complex.
- Acute trauma results from a single incident. (e.g. car accident, workplace incident)
- Chronic trauma is repeated and prolonged such as domestic violence or abuse. This trauma repeats itself over and over again.
- Complex trauma is exposure to many different traumatic events, often of an invasive, interpersonal nature. Complex trauma often involves both acute and chronic trauma, such as abuse from many different people over the course of many years.
